Madurai Kamaraj University is a Statutory University, established in 1965 by Govt. of Tamil nadu. It is recognized and funded by the UGC (University Grant Commission) and is a member of the Association of Indian Universities. It has been reaccredited by NAAC with a grade of A. The Directorate of Distance Education of this university was established in 1971 and has a student strength of about 1.20 lakhs.

Madurai Kamaraj University Distance Education, a unit of the statutory college, was established in the year 1971. The college is affiliated with Madurai Kamaraj University and re-accredited by NAAC with an 'A' grade. The university offers over 50 Undergraduate and postgraduate in the disciplines of Arts, Commerce, Education, and Science. College administration offers the facility of spot admission for many programs in distance learning. University additionally provides Diploma and Certificate courses granted by UGC in various disciplines, with duration ranging from 6 months to 12 months.
